f you are too fed up with the traditional massage an Israeli health and beauty spa has a solution for you - a snake massage. Ada Barak’s spa in northern Israel is offering a special massage in which six non-venomous snakes are let to slither on their aching muscles and joints.
Barak uses California and Florida king snakes, corn snakes and milk snakes in her treatments, which she said were inspired by her belief that once people get over any initial misgivings, they find physical contact with the creatures to be soothing.
Large reptiles are told to be good for deep tissue massage while their smaller counterparts are said to be ideal for delicate areas such as face. The spa treats clients with snakes to relax aching muscles and joints for about $70.

Massage industry in California is strongly backing the idea of statewide regulations for massage therapists instead of the current city-by-city regulations. Governour Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill for creating these statewide regulations.
Although the industry is supporting this new idea, some smaller massage schools and independent practitioners have opposed the measure. One argument against this is reducing the creativity.
“California’s been a breeding ground for different types of massage,” said Selena Lee, director of the McKinnon Institute of Massage in Oakland. “It’s been a birthplace of creativity. When you start to regulate that, you reduce the creativity.”

According to a new study, massage therapy may offer relief from pain and improve mood. In the study massage therapy was compared with “simple touch” therapy, in which the therapist placed both hands on the patient for three minutes at 10 specific body sites.
The results showed that people who had massage showed greater improvements in pain and mood symptoms than did people who received simple touch therapy. However, the effects seem to be short term. This is suggested by the fact that after three weeks there were no statistically significant sustained changes.

The function of massage has been seen as a way to relax in the past. However, nowadays many Americans also use massage therapy for medical reasons and pain relief.
Statistics show that every fourth person in the United States had experienced joint pain, aching or stiffness, low-back pain, migraine and/or severe headache lasting a day or more in the past month. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics, 2006) Massage therapy has been shown to give considerable relief from many types of pain, and is well known for relieving stress and promoting relaxation.
Relaxing massage can be had in the comfort of one’s own home, and there are many products on the market designed for that purpose. Massage also has been shown to provide a number of health and performance benefits for athletes. The benefits of massage include improved focus on the specific muscle groups used in each sports activity, improving range of motion and muscle flexibility, reducing injury risk, and shortening recovery time between workouts.
