The town Los Gatos had a new rule according to which each massage therapist must have 300 hours of documented massage coursework in 2007. Many of the therapists in the town didn’t have it, altought they were licensed therapists with a great experience.
The only problem is that many of the massaging courses were too expensive for the therapists, especially during todays’ economics. The only option for many therapists would have been to move away from the town.
That is the reason why West Valley College offered a free class to help massage therapists who have to adjust to new regulations. Total twenty massage therapists got the education that helped them to continue maintain their businesses. Funding for the classes was provided by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office.

Lolilomi - a Polynesian medical massage - is a massage style where the massagers use more of their bodies than just hands when massaging. Lolilomi as a whole may also include branches of nutrition, prayer and meditation as a part of it.
When performing Lolilomi massage the massagists uses his/her forehand, elbows and blades of the hand. The movement is different too. It may look like the therapist is dancing around the massage table.
Some massage facilities offer Lolilomi massage of two therapists. In this case the two therapists must be working in harmony or it can be distracting for the client. This method has the advantage that the client doesn’t know what part of the body is being touched next.

Massage industry in California is strongly backing the idea of statewide regulations for massage therapists instead of the current city-by-city regulations. Governour Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill for creating these statewide regulations.
Although the industry is supporting this new idea, some smaller massage schools and independent practitioners have opposed the measure. One argument against this is reducing the creativity.
“California’s been a breeding ground for different types of massage,” said Selena Lee, director of the McKinnon Institute of Massage in Oakland. “It’s been a birthplace of creativity. When you start to regulate that, you reduce the creativity.”
